I have 3 more days until I leave for college! Therefore, I have the majority of my dorm shopping done and my bags are semi-packed (okay-I haven’t even started yet, but that’s what the night before is for, right?) I decided that it’d be better to make my own dorm decorations than to spend more money on my dorm (#poorcollegestudent).
I saw this DIY idea on Pinterest a while back; however, I didn’t pin it and cannot find it anymore. Therefore, I kind of winged it and made do with what I remembered. Let’s get started!
- Cereal Box (Any thin cardboard box will do)
- Paint ($0.50)
- Glitter ($2.50)
- Elmer’s Glue
Print out a letter in your desired font and size (I used Microsoft Word). You may have to play around with the margins to make it fit.
Cut out the letter and secure it to one side of the cardboard using tape. Outline the letter and cut out the cardboard. Do the same thing on the other side of the cardboard.
Then, cut out strips 1″ wide.
Tape the strips to the cardboard letter. Tip: To curve the cardboard, rub it along the edge of a table.
Tape the other side to complete the letter.
Mix 1/2 cup flour with 1 cup water (Add more water until mixture is watery). Mix until all the flour chunks are gone. Lay down newspapers to keep your workspace clean. Then cut newspaper strips ~1″ wide.
Dip newspaper strips into mixture and start paper-macheing! Wait for it to dry and then apply a second layer (if desired).
After the paper mache is dried, paint with desired color and decorate it! I used a ruler and pencil to outline my design. Then I applied glue to the parts I wanted and added glitter.
This project took me ~2 hours to complete. It is fairly easy and definitely a fun way to make dorm decorations without spending a lot of money! I made one for myself, my friend, and my roommate. Enjoy!
